Carbon Nanostructures
Carbon Nanotube and NanowireTechnology
AMBIT Corporation's Nanotube technology utilizes our ability to precisely place, grow, and tune application-specific nanowires directly into junctions and other substrates. This capability allows designers to fabricate lightwave-scaled band gap and antenna structures, circuits and electro-optical devices conveniently and quickly using techniques that are largely compatible with standard semiconductor processing techniques. For this platform technology, AMBIT Corporation has devised processes that feature precise closed-loop control over carbon nanotube dimension and rates of nanotube growth. Here are a few of the devices that are enabled by our carbon nanotube technology:Detectors: Nanowires may be grown directly upon semiconducting surfaces and junctions, and tuned for optimal performance. The orientation and position of the nanostructures enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of the device. Because each nanowire, or group of nanowires can be tuned, frequency selectivity can be tailored for each application.
Optical harmonic emitters: We use inherent properties of carbon nanowires and nanowires on junctions to collect and emit electromagnetic energy, including lightwave energy, at harmonic multiples. Applications include efficient solid state broad band lighting, UV generation, RFID and optical identification and tracking systems, to name a few.
Frequency conversion: The same property that allows harmonic generation also permits the nanowire device to operate in a manner similar to a mixer, which combines two or more signals and produces a third signal. We envision applications in signal processing, communications, free-space optics, DWDM and others.
Switching and Beam Steering: When positioned in the right way, the antenna-like operation of nanoscale elements and the ability to switch and/or bias them, allows rapid redirection and reinforcement of single and multiple optical wavefronts. An important application of this technology involves high speed routing of optical signals without mirrors or other electromechanical devices.Other applications: AMBIT Corporation is currently developing other applications that make use of this new capability.
